To Study Abroad or Not to Study Abroad . . how much is it going to cost me?

Summer time is well . . .far away. But it's not too far away to start thinking about your summer plans. Within the next month, colleges and orgranizations will be rolling out their summer 2010 study abroad options which will charge $2,050 - $6,000. So how to choose? I say neither. I have always had success in going independent. It's cheaper and you have more interaction with "the locals"!

If you want to study Spanish, Portuguese, French or Italian the European Union has summer programs for you. Each state university (or most) and some private universities have what they call "international courses" or "summer classe" for foreigners. Registration for non-EU students is about 350-1,000 Euros depending on how many hours you want to study and if you want the university to help you with housing. Below are some options I put together for summertime study.

For Spanish students, the Universidad de Salamanca is popular. Check out the Universidad de Salamanca Cursos Internacionales. Don't forget to look into other state universities in other areas like the Universidad de Granada Centro de Lenguas Modernas or the Universidad de Nebrija.

The Universidade de Coimbra offers the same program. It is Portugual's oldest university. Check out a review.

Interested in programs in France? Try Campus France.

Want Italian? Try Universita di Bologna in Italy. You can choose from 2 - 4 weeks and with or without accomodation. the price ranges from 400 Euro to 1,000.

German is offered at Freie Universität Berlin.
