French Degree . . Almost for free

A friend of mine wants to get her PhD in French, but she doesn't want to pay and arm and a leg. The purpose of the degree is to get a $5,000 raise at her current public school teaching job. I'm always amazed how much people spend (over $30,000) to get a PhD when they only are going to earn an extra $5,000 a year. If you were to get a $5,000 raise a year after you completed the PhD, not including your books, transportation costs, etc., it would take you over 6 years to pay for the degree if the program cost $30,000. It would take over 7 years to actually profit.

If we tag on the standard 5% for a governments sponsored loan, that adds $1500 to the total price. That makes the total debt $31,500. Once again we haven't considered the costs of books, transportation and any other miscellaneous costs. At a $5,000 pay return it would take over 6 years to pay it back and 7 years to make a profit.

Should it take 7 years to make a profit? I don't think so. So after some research I refered her to UNISA, a distance learning university in South Africa. Basically, you get with a mentor, write your thesis (around 10,000 words) and if you defend it properly, you have degree! The cost . . .under $4,000. Why wait for seven years for a return, when you can get it in 1?

Good buy?
This cheap foreign language educator thinks so!
