Critical Languages are now online

I love studying languages.  I mean, I'm at the point in my life where I invest in categories that make it easier for me to be a language student and I believe language learning can give us insight to cultures and thought processes that are not our own.  For multiple years, I have wanted to take Haitian Creole and other critical languages that represented the African Diaspora.

I have had so much luck in finding opportunities online that were not once available.  More universities are making their special classes open and inclusive which is how it should have been to begin with.  I saw a job post at the University of Southern Maine calling for an Upward Bound Non-European Foreign Language Teacher.  Wow!  Talk about inclusion.  Not only is Upward Bound geared toward first-generation college students and/or those whose incomes fall under a certain level, it also is giving them a heads up by teaching, online no less, non European languages.  Which made me think that all of the languages I know, are European.  I need to work on that. So, if I had the opportunity to take a non-European language, I would choose between Haitian Creole and Yoruba.  The reason I only know European languages is because that was the only language offered to me.  I am glad that non-European languages are being offered in the name of inclusion.

Study Portuguese this summer

The Department of Portuguese offers summer courses in beginning and intermediate Portuguese. By taking both POR 101 and POR 102, or POR 201 and POR 202 in only 10 weeks, it's a great way for students to get ahead. What's awesome about this certificate is that it is completely online, the courses are 8 weeks and at the end you can get a certificate verifying your credential of an academic program in a critical language.  Awesome!
